This is one of those subjects you need to flush advertisements down the toilet. There is so much
wrong and misleading information on TV it drives me crazy to listen to lies. In fact, I have not
heard any truth at all when it comes to prime time television. Every bit of it is strategically worded
so that you come to the conclusions they want you to. Like I tell my kids, "never believe it, unless
you see it for yourself."
First, "diet" is a misused word. Diet is nothing more than you eating habits. It does not mean to
reduce or cut out anything. Second, you need to understand your body's different metabolic states
including Anabolic/Catabolic. Third, to understand proper diet, you need to understand what
nutrients you need and when your body needs them. Last but not least, you need to understand the
science and truth behind Daily Caloric Intake.
Now, before we get started, flush all previously learned media trash. If you believe in low carb
diets, "FLUSH". If you believe in low fat diets, "FLUSH". If you are a Strict No-animal
Vegetarian, there is no hope for you, go back to your home page. The goal of a proper diet is one
thing and one thing only. Making your body EFFICIENT!! When you achieve this, you can
manipulate your diet to achieve your goals. Whether you want reduce fat stores or increase muscle
mass, this comes down to efficiency of your muscles, circulation, digestion and regeneration.
Every minute of everyday your body has but only one goal. This goal is to recuperate and
regenerate bone, muscle, organ and fat cells. The more efficient your body can do this, the
healthier you are. Just because you can run a marathon or lift 500lbs does not mean you are
healthy. If you are not suppling the body of everything it needs to recuperate and repair, then as
you exercise you are doing nothing but damage.
Lets look at cancer, one of the best examples of unrepairable cell damage. Every living thing on this
planet battles cancer constantly. Cancer is simply cells that are damaged at a genetic or (blueprint)
level. Once a cell is damaged to the point at which it can reproduce that damage over and over
again it is called a cancer cell. I know that is weak and very simplified definition, but it is to only
show the extreme of damaged cells. The body is at a constant attack against damaged cells. But, If
your body is overcome with fatigued by malnutrition, then the battle is lost. Every time you restrict
your body of one nutrient you lower the efficiency of your body. By "nutrient", I don't mean just
vitamins and minerals. This also includes proteins, fats and carbohydrates. Of course, the most
important nutrient that you must give your body is WATER. Believe it or not, there are hundreds
of studies that show many illnessess, especially in elderly people, or cured by drinking more water.
The USDA says you should eight to ten 8oz glasses of water per day, This is a Minimum amount,
and another under estimated joke. What is the best way to determine if your drinking enough
water? What color is your urine? If your urine isn't clear, you are not drinking enough. Take into
account, that if your taking in daily vitamins or foods that are dyed in color, you can expect some
discoloring afterwards. I drink over 2 gallons per day. I have people ask me about "Death by
Drowning" when drinking to much water. This only occurs when idiots sit down and drink as much
as they can at one time. I drink 32oz of water 8-9 times per day. This amounts is average for
bodybuilders. Most of the guys I lift with are drinking up to 3 gallons.
Back to food, and the USDA. During my extensive research into the misleading information I came
upon a mind blowing report. It was so incredible that I had to look it up for myself. The USDA old
food pyramid which was taught for years to everyone was the exact same pyramid formula used in
cattle feed. The same cattle feed that they would use to fatten up their cattle before they went to
slaughter. WOW!!! In 1992 they changed there idea of the food pyramid a little, but it was still not
right. In fact, there was one independent nutritionists who was able to place all the food and the
correct portions that the USDA listed on a single table. To bad the table was the size of a standard
kitchen table. You would have to eat constantly all day to be able to eat it all. Now, if you look at
the USDA's website they have really modified it to what they call "My Pyramid" but the serving
amounts per category is still wrong.
The best way to describe proper diet is 40/40/20. This means 40% of your calories should come
form Protein. 40% of your diet should come form Complex Carbohydrates. 20% of calories should
come from Essential Fats. Now, lets take a normal 2000 calorie diet with the 40/40/20 broken
down into grams. Protein and carbs are 4 calories per gram. Fats are 9 calories per gram. In a 2000
calorie diet your should be eating, 800 calories or 200 grams of Protein, 800 calories or 200 grams
of Complex Carbs, and 400 calories or 45 grams of Essential Fat. This formula has been found, by
science nutritionists who study bodybuilders, to be the best ratio to support full recuperation of the
body after exercise. No matter how many calories you adjust your diet to, this ratio will allow your
body to become the most efficient.
Metabolic state, the condition of your metabolism at any given time. This includes Anabolic, when
your body is in full recuperation and regeneration mode. You have increased hormone levels and
chemical biology to rebuild and grow. Plus Catabolic, the state at which the body attacks healthy
tissue to extract need nutrients to maintain blood sugar levels and to repair priority cells.
The simple way to explain this system is that every time you eat, the body is anabolic. Every time
you go hungry, the body is catabolic. To achieve maximum efficiency you never let your body
reach full catabolic. The most important concept for the natural bodybuilder is to stop "muscle
breakdown", which is the result of the catabolic state. Many things influence anabolic and catabolic.
This includes type of food, how often and the amount you eat. Protein controls your body's
metabolism by controlling energy stores. Of course, your body"s energy is carbohydrates. The over
all cell regeneration and strengthening is done with protein and essential fats. If you were to only
eat 2 meals a day, your body will be anabolic for about 3 hours per meal, which will give you an
anabolic time of 6 hours and a catabolic time of 18 hours. Not very good for efficiency. But, if you
eat 6 small meals with a 3 hour anabolic time that would be 18 hour of anabolic and 6 hours of
catabolic. This is essential when it comes to building lean muscle and lowering the storage of fat.
A simple but effective start into this new way of life is to make time for you. Find time to eat and
eat right. When you wake up you should have protein as soon as possible. This stops the catabolic
effect of sleeping. Then you should have a healthy breakfast consisting of all 3 elements, protein,
carbs and fats. Then ensure you have a protein source every 3 hours to maintain anabolic
efficiency through the day. You should always take a carb source 1 hour prior to training, during
training and immediately after training. This ensures that the blood sugar levels stay with in reason
during the most crucial times. Any time the your blood sugar drops, your body releases Cortisol.
This is the opposite of insulin. Cortisol attacks the muscle to draw out more sugar for the blood
stream. This literally is the start of muscle breakdown and extremely lowers your body efficiency.
People who lose weight on low carb diets, fail to realise that 25-50% of the weight they are losing is
muscle, due to catabolic effects. Their bodies are constantly attacking muscle to keep there energy
and blood sugar constant. As they lose muscle, they are extremely lowering their "baseline"
metabolism (average daily metabolism at rest). Since they cause a "starvation mode" in the body,
every time they eat a meal, their body will store as much energy as possible. This is what causes
the weight rollercoaster effect.
To reduce the storage of fat you need to become more efficient at burning calories. It all comes
down to, the more lean muscle you have, the higher your "basline" metabolism. This means eating
proper food ratios every 3 hours and exercising. Just eating properly will give you better results
then going to the gym. Exercise is just a plus on becoming more efficient. The absolute truth is,
"you are what you eat"......
